State Testing

New Jersey requires schools to administer standardized assessments to measure student proficiency in core academic subjects. Spotswood School District administers all required state assessments, including:

New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA)

The NJSLA is administered annually in grades 3-8 in English language arts and mathematics, and in grades 5, 8, and 11 in science. These assessments measure student mastery of the New Jersey Student Learning Standards and provide information about how students are performing relative to grade-level expectations.

New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJGPA)

High school students take the NJGPA in grade 11 as part of New Jersey's graduation requirements. The assessment measures proficiency in English language arts and mathematics.

Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM)

Students with significant cognitive disabilities take the DLM alternate assessment, which measures progress toward achievement standards in a way that is appropriate for their individual learning needs.

ACCESS for ELLs

Students identified as English language learners take the ACCESS assessment annually to measure progress in developing English language proficiency.

State assessment results are shared with families when they become available from the New Jersey Department of Education, typically in the fall following spring testing. These results provide one measure of student performance and are used alongside classroom work, report cards, and other assessments to understand student progress.

District Testing

In addition to state testing, Spotswood uses diagnostic assessments to provide timely information that helps teachers adjust instruction and identify students who would benefit from additional support or enrichment.

Measures of Academic Progress (MAP)

MAP is administered to students in grades K-8 three times per year (fall, winter, and spring). MAP is a computer-adaptive assessment that adjusts to each student's performance level, providing precise information about what students know and are ready to learn next. Unlike NJSLA, which measures proficiency against grade-level standards, MAP measures individual student growth over time. Teachers use MAP data to differentiate instruction, form intervention groups, and set goals with students.

Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA)

Students in grades K-3 are assessed using DRA to measure reading proficiency and track growth over time. DRA evaluates reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension through one-on-one assessment. Teachers use DRA data to guide instructional planning and identify students who may need additional literacy support.

DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills)

Students in grades K-3 are assessed using DIBELS to monitor early literacy development. DIBELS provides quick, reliable information about foundational reading skills such as phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and comprehension. Teachers use DIBELS data to identify students who need additional reading support and to monitor progress throughout the year.

CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test)

The CogAT is administered to help identify students who may benefit from gifted and talented programming. This assessment measures reasoning abilities in verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal areas and is one component used in determining eligibility for advanced learning opportunities.

How Testing Supports Students

Assessment results are most useful when they inform instruction. Teachers use data from district assessments to:

• Understand each student's current performance and growth over time
• Identify students who need additional intervention or enrichment
• Group students for targeted instruction
• Adjust pacing and teaching strategies based on student needs
• Communicate with families about student progress

These assessments help us provide reading and math support through in-school programs in grades K-8. At the elementary level, reading and math interventionists work with students in small groups to build foundational skills. In grades 6-8, students may participate in quarterly intervention classes that provide focused support in areas where they need additional help.

District assessments are not used for grading purposes. They are diagnostic tools that help teachers make informed decisions about instruction and student support.

Supporting Students During Testing

Spotswood is committed to creating focused testing environments that allow students to do their best work. As much as possible, we reduce distractions and use special schedules to create testing windows that are as distraction-free as possible. Teachers also provide assessment support in their classes to prepare students for testing formats and expectations.

Families can build on these efforts by:

• Ensuring students get a good night's sleep before testing days
• Providing a healthy breakfast
• Encouraging students to do their best without creating anxiety about results
• Reminding students that assessments are just one way teachers learn about their progress
